What can wifi technology do for you...?

Wifi (wireless fidelity) has brought a new dimension in the field of wireless networking. The transmission of data is done through the radio waves in the free space. It cuts down the cost of laying down the cables for network connections. Wi-Fi allows the user to access the Internet anywhere in or around the given location, but requires a separate Internet service.

These days Wifi hotspots are installed in various public places, where people can connect to the network such as, Libraries, Hotels, college campuses, office buildings, coffee shops, and many other public areas. That made business users who can gain extra work time, by squeezing in Internet time at various Wifi hotspots in need for the service. Here is how you can locate wifi hotspots in Malaysia.

Having a good Wi-Fi experience directly translates into a satisfying Internet experience. Hence we see that wifi has numerous advantages. If we consider the present world, we find that the demands for the wifi connections are increasing. People are beginning to appreciate the advanced features wifi network provides to the user. Due to its increasing demand the scope of the wifi network is also on the rise.

You can have a better speed of Internet connection by using wifi network. Since the bandwidth provided by wireless cutwork is large connection speed between two nodes is faster. It is also faster to transmit data between two devices connected through wifi. Wifi cuts down the cost of laying down the cable for network connection. With no wires attached it is possible that the sender node can be mobile. The equipments required to fully establishing the wifi network anywhere is relatively cheap. So the cost incurred in establishing the wireless wifi connection is cheaper and also very easy to install. Wifi established in small place do not even need the wireless routers.

Wifi is rather amazing, you can surf the world, download songs, send email and transfer files conveniently at high speed and at some distance away from your Internet connection. In addition you do not have to call or pay electrician to string the Internet network wiring in your home. If you wish to move your computer, you can just pick it up and make the move. Wifi is actually quite simple, useful and most of all convenient.

I'm looking forward for full implementation of wifi connectivity in Malaysia in comin years......

6 Ways to Optimize Your Wi-Fi Setup

With the increasing use of portable Wi-Fi enabled devices like notebooks and mobile phones, it is more important than ever to optimize your Wi-Fi setup to get the most benefit. Here are some simple ways to maximize performance and increase security of your Wi-Fi setup.

Equipment

There has been a huge improvement in speeds and performance offered by Wi-Fi equipment since devices first started appearing in the mid 90's. When shopping for devices it would be a good idea to note the specifications of your current equipment and make sure your Access Point (AP) choice support them. The most common types of hardware supports 802.11g (54Mbps) which is also backward compatible to 802.11b (11Mbps).

Placement

When choosing a location for your Wi-Fi AP, make sure you keep it away from obstructions, especially metal objects such as fridges and filing cabinets or other potential signal obstacles. Generally your AP should be up as high as possible which enables a clearer line of sight to your Wi-Fi clients.

Interference

These days with the common use of transmitting devices such as cordless telephones, video senders and wireless game controllers, there is the potential for interference which causes your Wi-Fi setup to perform poorly in both range and speed. 802.11b and 802.11g both use the 2.4Ghz frequency so cordless phones or other devices using this same frequency have the potential to impact your Wi-Fi setup a lot. You can usually set your AP to a different channel which may reduce disruption.

Antenna

Your AP will generally come with a small antenna which performs adequately for small offices or homes. You can usually unscrew this antenna and replace it with a better one which will provide greater coverage. Alternative antennas are available to screw on directly to replace the supplied unit or with a short length of coax so you can position the antenna at a better, usually higher location. Generally these antennas will provide 360 degree coverage but directional units are also available which would suit installations that may be a far corner and concentrate coverage in one direction. For locations where coverage is needed outside a building, for example a school ground or outdoor cafe, an external outdoor antenna can be mounted in a suitable location and connected to the AP using a short a length of coax.

Power

Some AP's have a power setting allowing you to increase or decrease output power. This is useful if you would like to prevent your Wi-Fi coverage spilling out outside your home or office too much or give your coverage a bit of a boost. This doesn't increase your AP's ability to receive your Wi-Fi clients, which is what a better antenna can do.

Security

It is a good idea to lock down your Wi-Fi network to prevent unauthorized access and people snooping inside your network. WEP was the original method of securing Wi-Fi networks but has proven to be less secure than was hoped. Since then WPA was introduced and is present on almost all Wi-Fi AP's and other devices currently being sold. WPA is a more secure alternative to the original WEP method but may not be supported on all your devices.

just give it a try, wont you....

Laptop And Wifi The Revolution

Accessing the web has a long time been a problem for all of us. There have been a number of times when it was necessary to log in onto the internet for an important reason but it just won't happen. You therefore feel frustrated because you have missed out on an opportunity to meet a friend in a chat room. Wifi access provides you easy access to the web without having to go through the tiring ritual of setting up your laptop with wires and cables as well as checking if all the cables are connected to the right places.

You can not complete a wireless network without a router, it connects to the broadband connection and in turn the access point in the router enables your laptop, computer, and video game console to connect with the web and together. There are many wifi routers in the market cause wireless networking is one of the greatest new computer technologies in terms of convenience. If you are weighting the pros and cons of wireless before taking the leap, there are some advantages to consider.

The first is that no more wires of all the reasons to switch your network to wifi.

The second advantage is that one Wifi Access for all Wireless devices gives you a cheap, easy way to share one internet connection among multiple devices. You can add new device to your network simply switching them on, they will get an internet connection instantly.

In order to keep in touch with your business, friends and to receive and deliver information, people carry their laptops. In that way they can access the internet, have conferences and many other features that their desktop computer can do back at the office.

That is new revolution..and it mean business...:)

Wifi Projection Usage....

Believe it or not, base on report the WiFi hotspot market has entered a revival period, and it estimates that hotspot usage will surge by 47 percent in 2009, bringing total worldwide connections to 1.2 billion.

Renewed interest from mobile operators and increased usage among business and consumer users is fueling this revival, the firm said.

A market that appeared to be languishing due to revenue shortcomings has found a renewed life force. Mobile operators have become increasingly involved in the hotspot market globally as they assess the potential of hotspots to offload wireless data traffic from overburdened 3G networks. Also, mass market adoption of WiFi-enabled smart phones has significantly altered hotspot usage, with these devices accounting for the majority of access sessions in some locations.
Some other interesting information is that the projection that AT&T, which offers WiFi automatic authentication on many smart phones, is on course to record 500 percent usage growth for 2009 vs. 2008. And Asia-Pacific will experience the greatest growth in venue deployments over the next few years, largely driven by large-scale deployments in China.

So, I think wifi well replaced old fashion device significantly in coming years. So, get prepared Malaysian, the wave is comin..

Wifi....but what is internet..

The Internet, sometimes called simply "the Net," is a worldwide system of computer networks - a network of networks in which users at any one computer can, if they have permission, get information from any other computer (and sometimes talk directly to users at other computers). It was conceived by the Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA) of the U.S. government in 1969 and was first known as the ARPANET. The original aim was to create a network that would allow users of a research computer at one university to be able to "talk to" research computers at other universities. A side benefit of ARPANet's design was that, because messages could be routed or rerouted in more than one direction, the network could continue to function even if parts of it were destroyed in the event of a military attack or other disaster.

Today, the Internet is a public, cooperative, and self-sustaining facility accessible to hundreds of millions of people worldwide. Physically, the Internet uses a portion of the total resources of the currently existing public telecommunication networks. Technically, what distinguishes the Internet is its use of a set of protocols called TCP/IP (for Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol). Two recent adaptations of Internet technology, the intranet and the extranet, also make use of the TCP/IP protocol.

For many Internet users, electronic mail (e-mail) has practically replaced the Postal Service for short written transactions. Electronic mail is the most widely used application on the Net. You can also carry on live "conversations" with other computer users, using Internet Relay Chat (IRC). More recently, Internet telephony hardware and software allows real-time voice conversations.

The most widely used part of the Internet is the World Wide Web (often abbreviated "WWW" or called "the Web"). Its outstanding feature is hypertext, a method of instant cross-referencing. In most Web sites, certain words or phrases appear in text of a different color than the rest; often this text is also underlined. When you select one of these words or phrases, you will be transferred to the site or page that is relevant to this word or phrase. Sometimes there are buttons, images, or portions of images that are "clickable." If you move the pointer over a spot on a Web site and the pointer changes into a hand, this indicates that you can click and be transferred to another site.

Using the Web, you have access to millions of pages of information. Web browsing is done with a Web browser, the most popular of which are Microsoft Internet Explorer and Netscape Navigator. The appearance of a particular Web site may vary slightly depending on the browser you use. Also, later versions of a particular browser are able to render more "bells and whistles" such as animation, virtual reality, sound, and music files, than earlier versions.

If there is no internet..and there is no WIFI laaa...

WiFi Marketing Startegies

Marketing may in many different shape/strategies..what matter most is whether the objective can be achieve..

Well, free as long as you watch an ad or a promo for whichever company is sponsoring it, such as Yahoo, Microsoft and now Google. But while we might roll our eyes at what looks like just another way to serve up ads, the idea of free WiFi-based marketing is actually pretty smart.

A typical free Wi-Fi campaign offers travelers 15-20 minutes of complimentary Internet access in exchange for watching a 30-second video, by which the user is engaged directly with the brand. Other opportunities to engage consumers include lead generation, product and service trials, social media applications, location-based searches, customer surveys and downloadable content, Boingo noted in a press release.
Giving users something in return for their attention is a smart way to engage with an audience, which increasingly glosses over display advertising. It’s a welcome development, one that strikes a better balance between the needs of a marketeer and the end user (and potential customer).

It’s also a recognition of how important Wi-Fi is in the quest for constant connectivity, especially as more and more folks tote around WiFi-enabled smart phones. With 70 minutes spent behind the security gates at airports on average, everyone from business travelers to harried parents looking for a kid-friendly diversion can now find something online. That’s all good, but one can imagine it’s going to get a lot harder to find an empty power outlet this season.

And i'm looking forward for our Malaysian Government to roll out an advanced national communications infrastructure soon by wiring up 1.2 million households and business premises with fibre-optics to boost Internet connection speeds to between 10Mbps (megabits per second) and 1Gbps (gigabit per second). Current speeds are up to 4Mbps

SO MORE FREE WIFI CAN BE ACCESS.....

What is WiFi??

The question, "What is wi-fi?" seems to be on the lips of many Malaysian these days. The term wi-fi has certainly become a buzz word but whether or not it is always used correctly is debatable. The problem is many people do not really know what wi-fi means. They may have a vague idea of what is meant by wi-fi but don't really grasp the subject. There are others who believe they know exactly what wi-fi means but they are not correct in their interpretation. The confusion surrounding this term is a result of the relative newness of the term combined with the common misuse of the term. This article will explain what wi-fi is and will also explain how the term is most often used.

One common misconception about the term wi-fi is that it is an acronym for a longer term. It is often referred to be short for wireless fidelity but this is not true. Wi-fi is a term that has been trademarked by the Wi-fi Alliance. This organization holds the responsibility for defining the standards for wi-fi. The term wi-fi refers specifically to networking technology which provides wireless high speed Internet connections through the use of radio waves. Under the definition provided by the Wi-Fi alliance any technology which provides a wireless local area network and adheres to the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers 802.11 standards is considered to be wi-fi technology.

The language above describes the technical definition of wi-fi. This type of definition is very important to those with a vested interest in the industry of wireless networking. Having a clear understanding of the term and using it correctly gives them credibility in their field. Equally important to these individuals is understanding how wi-fi technology works. In very general terms, radio waves are transmitted to access points. Users of mobile devices can use these access points to connect to the Internet.

Another important aspect of the term wi-fi refers to electronic devices which are capable of accessing the Internet via wireless connections. Wi-Fi technology is supported by a number of devices including laptops, cell phones, PDAs, video game consoles and all types of consumer electronic products. These products are usually referred to as being wi-fi compatible or wi-fi certified. This wi-fi certified designation is awarded by the Wi-Fi Alliance. The wi-fi certified designation is of particular interest because it assures the consumer that the product will be interoperable with all other wi-fi certified electronic devices. This includes products from different manufacturers.

Finally, consider how the term wi-fi is most commonly used. Although the proper definition may refer to the technology most people use the term wi-fi interchangeably with the term wireless. They may refer to wireless hotspots as wi-fi areas. In this way the term wi-fi is being used to define any area where a person can connect to the Internet on their laptop, cell phone, PDA or other mobile device. Business establishments such as coffee shops, bars and cafes often boast about offering free wi-fi access. Likewise airports, hotels and hospitals may also advertise the availability of wi-fi connections.
